Good afternoon Nikkola Newsletterers!

And Happy Easter! I hope that you find time to enjoy with friends or family this holiday weekend. And if you're a Christian, like me, I hope you're able to spend time in praise and worship for what Christ did for all who believe.

He is risen!

Natural SSRI Alternatives for ADHD Support. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is most commonly diagnosed in children, but it can also persist into adulthood. While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often prescribed for the treatment of ADHD, some people prefer natural alternatives due to concerns about side effects or a desire to explore alternative treatment options. In this article, I will explore natural alternatives to SSRIs for the treatment of ADHD. I’ll review the basics of ADHD, the role of SSRIs in traditional ADHD treatment, and the search for natural alternatives. I’ll also cover the potential of diet, supplements, lifestyle adjustments, and mindfulness techniques as alternatives to SSRI medication in managing ADHD symptoms. Keep reading...

Why a Vegan Diet is Dangerous for Developing Children. The health benefits of a vegan diet in adults are highly controversial. In kids, a vegan diet could be catastrophic. A new research study from Finland shows that a vegan diet creates numerous deficiencies in babies and toddlers. Keep reading...While I’m not surprised by the findings, I hope that the plant-based diet folks wake up to the long-term risks of such a diet in young and developing human beings.

Myokines: Pharmaceutical-Like Effects of Strength Training. Strength training, along with optimal sleep and a high-protein diet, could be considered a preventative treatment as well as a medical therapy. Benefits of resistance training include:

  • Reversing muscle loss (sarcopenia or cachexia)
  • Restoring a healthy metabolism
  • Reducing body fat
  • Improving physical function, strength, coordination, and mobility
  • Improving insulin sensitivity and reversing type II diabetes
  • Enhancing cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides while improving vascular tone
  • Increasing bone density
  • Enhancing mental health
  • Reducing inflammation

That’s quite a list of health benefits. If a drug did all that, it would be a bigger seller than a COVID-19 vaccine. Keep reading...

πŸ”₯ Hot Topic: Stop Using These Dryer Sheets and Disinfectants πŸ”₯

A new study in the journal Nature shows that two common chemicals in fabric softeners and disinfectants can lead to serious neurological problems.

The researchers found that oligodendrocytes, cells that provide protective insulation around nerve cells are especially vulnerable to quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs).

When these nerve cells get damaged, it leads to many of the neurological diseases people face today, including autism and multiple sclerosis.

QACs are found in many everyday products such as disinfectants, sanitizers, fabric softeners, and personal care items like shampoos and conditioners. In the healthcare industry, they are used for sterilizing surgical instruments and in hospital-grade disinfectant sprays and wipes. They are also used in wood preservation, water purification, and as antistatic agents in various manufacturing processes.

OFPRs are commonly applied to a variety of consumer products, including furniture, electronics, and building materials, to meet fire safety standards. They're also commonly found in household dust!

Commonly known sources of QACs include Lysol and Clorox disinfectants, Downy and Snuggle fabric softeners, and Head & Shoulders and Pantene soaps and shampoos, but these are only a tiny fraction of the products containing these chemicals.

🧠 Mental Fitness

Consistent Exercise = Better Sleep. Data from 4400 men and women over 10 years shows that those who consistently exercise for at least an hour, at least two times per week, get better sleep. They're 42% less likely to have trouble falling asleep, 22% less likely to have symptoms of insomnia, and 55% more likely to be normal sleepers. Exercise is a powerful sleep aid!

Keto may slow Alzheimer's. Research from the University of California, Davis, shows that a ketogenic diet may slow the progression of Alzheimer's. The research was done on animals, so it's possible that it won't have the same effect on humans. However, Alzheimer's is associated with insulin resistance, so it's likely that a ketogenic diet would be beneficial in humans with the same condition.

Increasing fiber may protect your brain with age. A new study showed that in 12 weeks, people over the age of 60 were able to significantly improve memory just by taking a fiber supplement. Good fiber sources (like GBX Seed Fiber) improve the makeup of the gut microbiome, which directly affects brain function. If you're over 60 years old, write this tip down, at least until you start using fiber. After that, hopefully, you'll remember it.

The U.S. fell to a new low in nationwide happiness. The United States now ranks 23rd out of 143 countries for happiness, falling from 15th last year. We rank 62nd in the world for those under 30 years old. Whatever could be contributing to America's unhappiness? That's a rhetorical question.

Fishing for Testosterone. Among older men, a higher intake of low-fat fish is associated with higher testosterone levels. I think this is interesting because it's pretty hard to eat tilapia and cod without adding some butter. So, if the fish was lean to begin with, but you add butter afterwards, the fish is still considered "lean fish," right? Joking aside, it's worth it to include more fish in your diet anyway.

πŸ₯© Nutrition

Bifidobacterium improves body composition. A new meta-analysis shows that consumption of Bifidobacterium genus probiotics can help lower body fat and visceral fat.

Resistance training + cheese consumption = Better body comp. That's right. A new study shows that combining resistance training and cheese consumption improves body composition AND gut health. The next logical question is, which type of cheese is best? Cheddar, Mozzarella, Gouda, Goat, or something else?

You know how we're told the "evidence" suggests that eating red meat raises the risk of colorectal cancer? Based on a review of the "evidence," it turns out that there's no data to support that assumption.

Feel Better. Fast!

Energy+, EDGE, and MentaBiotics make up the Happy Juice supplement stack, with ingredients clinically proven to:

  • decrease anxiousness scores by 55%
  • decrease irritability scores by 60%
  • decrease fatigue by 64%

Good afternoon Nikkola Newsletterers! We're on vacation this week in Florida. For the reasons I wrote about in this article, I'm limiting my use of sunglasses. You might want to try doing the same if you're going on vacation this spring. We're visiting some friends who've had some incredible results from their Amare products, so that's fun to talk about. They're also "bangers" (a new term I learned) in Pickle Ball. We'll play a lot of that while we're here, though Vanessa and I are well below...

Good afternoon Nikkola Newsletterers! Last week, I asked about what you're struggling with the most. I know sleep is a common concern for people, but I wasn't expecting that it would be the top issue of all. Though it wasn't overwhelmingly dominant, it still took the top spot. I think there's a lot more I could write on the topic to give you guidance and encouragement, so I'll focus more on strategies to improve your sleep with some of my upcoming blog posts. Clearly, there's a need for help...
